What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts or screws that are surgically inserted into the jawbone where teeth have gone missing. Traditional tooth replacements like bridges and dentures sit on top of the gums, only replacing the crown or the visible portion of the tooth. Dental implants, however, are the only way to replace the root of the tooth, which is an essential part of a healthy smile and jawbone.
Implants are typically constructed of durable and biocompatible titanium that fuses with the jawbone for a secure and permanent tooth replacement solution. A single dental implant can replace a single missing tooth with the help of a crown on top. Or, multiple implants can be used to secure the jawbone and anchor multi-tooth restorations like bridges and implant-supported dentures.

Types of Dental Implants We Offer

Single Tooth Implants

A single tooth implant uses one implant and one crown to replace one missing tooth. It’s the most common type of implant treatment and an excellent choice when a tooth has been lost to decay, a crack, or an injury, or when a damaged tooth needs to be extracted.

Implant-Supported Bridges

When two or more teeth in a row are missing, an implant-supported bridge can replace them without an implant for every tooth. Implants placed at each end of the gap anchor a fixed bridge, giving you a strong, stable result that doesn’t depend on your natural teeth for support.

Implant-Supported Dentures

If you’ve struggled with a loose lower denture, sore spots, or messy adhesives, implant-supported dentures can make a dramatic difference. A small number of implants hold the denture firmly in place, so it stays secure while you eat, speak, and laugh. Snap-in designs can still be removed for cleaning, giving you the convenience of a denture with the stability of implants.

Full-Arch Implants (All-on-4)

Full-arch implants replace an entire upper or lower set of teeth with a fixed bridge supported by four to six implants. Because the teeth are attached permanently and removed only by the dentist, they look, feel, and function much like natural teeth.

The Dental Implant Process, Step by Step

Getting a dental implant takes several visits spread over a few months, but each step is straightforward, and we’ll make sure you know what to expect before we begin.

  1. Consultation and 3D Planning: Your journey starts with a thorough exam. Dr. Bartz evaluates your teeth and gums, reviews your health history, and takes digital scans and a 3D CBCT scan to measure your bone and map out exactly where each implant should go.
  2. Tooth Removal (If Needed): If a damaged tooth is still in place, we’ll remove it gently first. In some cases, the implant can be placed during the same visit.
  3. Bone or Gum Grafting (If Needed): When tooth loss thins the jawbone, a bone graft rebuilds the area so the implant has a solid foundation. We perform grafting right here in our office.
  4. Implant Placement: After the area is numbed, Dr. Bartz places the implant post in the jawbone. Most single implants take about an hour or less, and sedation dentistry is available if you’d like to feel more relaxed.
  5. Healing and Osseointegration: Over the next few months, your jawbone fuses with the implant. When appropriate, you’ll wear a temporary tooth or your existing denture in the meantime, so you’re never without a smile.
  6. Final Restoration: Once the implant has healed, we take a quick digital impression- no goopy molds- and design your permanent crown, bridge, or denture. Top-tier American dental labs craft every restoration for a precise fit and natural look.
  7. Follow-up Care: We’ll check your bite, show you how to clean around your implant, and keep an eye on it at every regular checkup.

Dental Implant Recovery: What to Expect

Most patients are surprised by how manageable recovery is. During the first day or two, mild soreness, swelling, and minor bleeding are normal and usually ease with rest, cold packs, and pain relievers taken as directed. Many people return to work the next day after a single implant. For the first week, stick to soft foods, avoid chewing on the implant site, and skip straws and smoking so the area can heal undisturbed. Over the following months, your implant will quietly fuse with the bone while you go about your normal routine.

Call our Heath implant dentist right away if you notice heavy bleeding, swelling that worsens after three days, a fever, or an implant that feels loose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental implants worth it?

For most people with missing teeth, yes. Implants are the only option that replaces the tooth root, which helps preserve the jawbone and protects your neighboring teeth. And because they can last for decades, they often cost less over time than replacing a bridge or denture several times.

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Coverage varies from plan to plan. Many plans cover part of the crown, extraction, or grafting, and some cover the implant itself. Our team will check your benefits and explain your out-of-pocket cost before you start.

What if I don’t have enough bone for an implant?

A bone graft can often rebuild the area so an implant can be placed successfully. Dr. Bartz will evaluate your bone and walk you through your options, including grafting, which we perform in our office.

Can I get implants if I already wear dentures?

Yes. Many denture wearers switch to implant-supported dentures, which use implants to hold the denture firmly in place. In some cases, your existing denture can even be adapted to snap onto the implants.
